Carpobrotus rossii – Coastal Pigface / Karkalla Carpobrotus rossii, commonly known as coastal pigface or karkalla, is a tough Australian native succulent groundcover with fleshy green leaves, bright purple-pink daisy-like flowers and edible fruit. It is a fast-growing, spreading plant that forms a dense mat, making it useful for sunny native gardens, coastal plantings, rockeries, embankments, borders, verge plantings and erosion-prone areas. This hardy groundcover is especially well suited to dry, exposed and well-drained positions. Once established, Carpobrotus rossii is drought tolerant, salt tolerant and useful in coastal or inland gardens where reflected heat, wind and low-water conditions can be challenging for softer plants. Flowers Carpobrotus rossii produces vibrant purple-pink daisy-like flowers, usually through the warmer months, with flowering influenced by season, sun exposure and local conditions. The flowers open best in bright light and add strong colour to low native plantings. The flowers are attractive to native bees, hoverflies, butterflies and other beneficial insects, making this plant useful in habitat gardens and biodiversity-focused landscapes. Foliage and Fruit The foliage is thick, fleshy and succulent, helping the plant store water and tolerate dry conditions. Stems spread across the ground and may root where they touch suitable soil, helping the plant form a stabilising mat. The fruit is edible when ripe and has a sweet, salty flavour. The fleshy leaves are also used as a native food plant. As with all edible native plants, only eat material that has been correctly identified and grown without chemical treatment. Cultivation Soil: Best grown in well-drained soil. Suitable for sandy, gravelly, loamy and lightly clay-based soils where drainage is good. Avoid wet, poorly drained positions, especially through cool weather. Sunlight: Prefers full sun for dense growth and best flowering. It may tolerate light shade, but flowering is usually strongest in open, sunny positions. Watering: Water regularly while establishing. Once established, Carpobrotus rossii is drought tolerant and needs little supplementary water except during extended dry periods or when grown in pots. Frost tolerance: Moderately frost tolerant once established, especially in well-drained positions. Young plants may benefit from some protection while settling in. Drought and salt tolerance: Drought tolerant and salt tolerant once established. A very useful plant for coastal gardens, low-water landscapes, exposed sunny banks and dry native plantings. Pruning and maintenance: Trim lightly if needed to manage spread, shape edges or keep it away from paths and neighbouring plants. Avoid overwatering and heavy feeding, as this can encourage soft growth. Uses Edible native groundcover for bush food gardens. Coastal and salt-tolerant native planting. Sunny rockeries, banks, borders and embankments. Low-water and drought-tolerant garden designs. Habitat gardens for bees, hoverflies and beneficial insects. Large pots, raised beds and verge plantings. Useful for erosion control where soil is well drained. Habitat Value Carpobrotus rossii is a useful habitat plant for low native gardens. Its flowers support native bees, hoverflies, butterflies and other beneficial insects, while the dense spreading foliage provides ground-level cover and helps protect soil. It combines well with other hardy Australian native plants such as low-growing Eremophilas, Chrysocephalum, Myoporum, Rhagodia, Dianella, saltbushes and coastal shrubs. Growing Tips Plant in full sun with excellent drainage. Water through establishment, then reduce watering once the plant is growing strongly. For containers, use a free-draining native potting mix and avoid saucers that hold water. In gardens with rich or irrigated soil, monitor spread and prune as needed. In dry, exposed positions, Carpobrotus rossii is generally low-maintenance once established. Shipping Note At Sylvaterre Native Nursery, every plant is treated with care and respect. Unlike many online nurseries that ship tubestock lying flat — often stacked on top of each other in standard Australia Post boxes — all Sylvaterre plants are shipped upright in custom-made cardboard plant boxes. This helps ensure they arrive healthy, happy, and ready to thrive in your garden or pots. See our shipping cartons in the image gallery.
